The East La Penitence Health Centre is being used to roll out Guyana’s first paperless health facility.

This was revealed today by Public Health Minister, Volda Lawrence during her contribution to the 2019 budget debate.

Lawrence noted that the paperless system is part of the need to improve the Government Health Information System (GHIS). She said that the GHIS features a single Electronic Medical Record platform that will capture pertinent patients’ information such as their demographic, medical history, clinical treatment data upon entry, transfer from or within a facility via this system, thus eliminating the need for paper-based documentation.

The Public Health Minister said that the New Amsterdam Hospital is 80 percent completed where GHIS is concerned. But since East La Penitance is fully completed, that will be rolled out first.

In 2019, the Minister said that a Pharmacy/Inventory module, an integral component of the GHIS directly linked to the Essential Drug/Medicine List, will be rolled out. The Parliamentarian said that this will aid doctors in the prescription of drugs, and ensure accountability.
