Dharanpaul Outar called ‘Paul’, 69, of Fort Ordinance East Canje Berbice, is now a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was struck down around 18:30hrs last evening on the Fort Ordinance Public Road. His condition is regarded as serious, police say.

Enquiries disclosed that motor pickup #GSS1447, owned and driven by Sheldon Ronaldo Shewpersaud, 32, of Sheet Anchor East Canje Berbice, was proceeding south along the Fort Ordinance Public Road at an alleged fast rate of speed when he collided with Outar, who was on a pedal cycle.

Shewpersaud told police that Outar was riding towards him on the right-hand side and as they were about to pass each other – where the road is uneven – the pedal cyclist collided with his vehicle.

As a result of the collision, Outar fell onto the road’s surface and received injuries about his body. Shewpersaud then picked up Outar in an unconscious condition and took him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

He was then admitted as a patient and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a semi-conscious condition, where he was further seen and examined by a doctor on duty. He was subsequently admitted as a patient in the Accident and Emergency Unit.

The driver was found to be above the prescribed limit of alcohol. Readings show 152 and 154% Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) in his breath.

Investigations are ongoing.
