Guyana recorded 36 COVID-19 fatalities last week, making it one of the deadliest weeks since the country confirmed its first imported case on March 11, 2020.

Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony expressed dismay at the loss of the life, upping his call for citizens to take COVID-19 vaccines being administered by the government.

He said that none of the 36 persons, who succumbed to the virus, was vaccinated.

“Over the last 25 hours, we would have had four new deaths and most of these have occurred at the Ocean View Hospital. Over the last week, we had 36 deaths. What is important to note that in the last week, the 36 deaths that we’ve had, all of them were unvaccinated. So, it begs the question: ‘Why is it that people are not getting vaccinated?’ We know that if you’re vaccinated, then you wouldn’t get the severe form of the disease,” he said.

Guyana has recorded 687 deaths so far with 384 males and 303 females.

There are 129 persons hospitalised countywide with a more severe form of the virus.

“Eleven [persons] at the West Demerara Regional Hospital with six on oxygen; we have seven persons at the Mahaicony Hospital with six on oxygen; we have five persons at the New Amsterdam Hospital, three of them are on oxygen; we have three persons in Bartica, two of them on oxygen; and we have two persons at Wismar, one is on oxygen. We currently have nine maternal cases at the GPHC, those are in the COVID section of the Obstetrics Ward…We also have 92 persons at the Ocean View hospital, and of those 92, we have an additional six maternal cases and we have 29 persons currently in the Intensive Care Unit,” the Minister reported.
