Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony is urging citizens to be cautious as Guyana continues to record high numbers of new COVID-19 infections.

“Right now, we have about 3,092 active cases across Guyana…We’ve seen increase in cases in all Regions. Over the last 24 hours, we’ve had 135 new cases and that’s after doing 1,158 tests. So, we are seeing [new] cases on a daily basis. Of those 3,092 that are active, we have right now, 139 in the hospital,” the Minister said during his COVID-19 update today.

He said that patients are being kept at the West Demerara Regional, Mahaicony, New Amsterdam, Bartica, and Wismar Hospitals. There are 104 patients at the Infectious Disease Hospital at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, with 31 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“So again, as you can see, the ICU is filling up, and we really want to urge people to be cautious; to wear their masks, to keep social distancing, to sanitise their hands when they’re indoor environment, [and] to be in a ventilated environment.”

HOTSPOTS
Dr Anthony expressed alarm that that several villages continue to record high numbers of infections. The number of active cases at Tuschen, on the East Bank of Essequibo, has increased significantly within the last week. There are now 61 cases there, the Minister said.

He added, “We have, in Region Four on the East Bank, 80 cases at Diamond. We have 62 cases in Eccles, 48 cases in the Timehri area…So on that East Bank, you have a lot of hotspots there, and I think people ought to be very careful where we see these clusters. But on the East Bank alone, we have 460 active cases,” he said.
