A man was today sentenced to ten months in jail after he confessed to stealing cash and two cellphones amounting to more than $300,000.

28-year-old Dwayne Bestford of Lot 625 Grove East Bank Demerara, was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he was charged with armed robbery.

The charge states that on June 3 at Water street Agricola, E.B.D., while in the company of another and armed with a gun, he robbed Ryan Calendar of an iPhone 5S valued at $150,000, a Samsung A20S valued at $145,000, and $48,9000 in cash.

He pleaded guilty to the charge but told the court that he doesn’t own a gun. He said that he stole from the man and is accepting of that fact but that he never had any guns.

The Prosecutor told the court that according to the facts, between 19:15 and 19:30 on June 3, the complainant was walking in the vicinity of Water Street, Agricola, when he was approached by the man and another person.

The facts further state that one of the men held a metal object to Calendar’s back before they relieved him of the items mentioned in the charge. They then made good their escape.

The man-made a report at the Ruimveldt police station and on June 6, the police were able to make an arrest. According to the prosecutor, Bestford had the iPhone and a scotia bank card belonging to Calendar in his possession when he was arrested.

After listening to both parties, the Chief Magistrate sentenced the man to ten months in jail.
