Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred yesterday at about 20:00hrs on the Bee Hive public road, East Coast Demerara.

The accident involved Motor Car PGG 2109, driven by Dindyal Rantydeo (now deceased), a 28-year-old from Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara. One occupant was with him in the car, a 37-year-old from Fairfield Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.

The other vehicle involved in the accident, PAH 766, was driven by a 32-year-old male resident of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara. Along with the driver, there were four other occupants in the car.

Enquiries disclosed that motor car PAH 766 was proceeding east along the northern driving lane of Bee Hive public road when the driver alleged that he saw another car proceeding west on the southern driving lane, with its hazard lights flashing since a horse was crossing the road.

Motorcar PGG 2109, which was proceeding west, overtook the vehicle (with the hazard lights on) and collided with the front portion of motorcar PAH 766, which was proceeding in the opposite direction. As a result of the collision, the occupants of PAH 766 received injuries about their bodies, along with the driver and occupant of PGG 2109.

The driver of motor car PGG 2109 was picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens, placed into a Police vehicle and escorted to Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced ‘dead on arrival’. The other injured persons were escorted to Mahaicony Public Hospital for medical attention.

The scene was visited by police ranks at about 20:10 hrs. The driver was breathalysed, and no trace of alcohol was found on his breath. The vehicles involved were lodged to be examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer, and a Notice of Intended Prosecution was served.
