Police are investigating an alleged robbery and murder committed on Deonarine, a 70-year-old Guyanese male pensioner who resided at Lusignan Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara.He was killed at approximately 03:30 hrs today (Wednesday) at the said address, allegedly by two males, both dressed in all black with their faces covered with ski masks.
Police visited the scene at approximately 06:30 hrs and investigations so far revealed that Deonarine lived with his reputed wife, a 69-year-old female pensioner at the aforementioned address. The couple resided in a one-storey wooden house.According to the wife, she awoke at around 01:30 hrs this morning and went to the kitchen to clean and cook. After leaving the kitchen, she left the door to the hallway open and proceeded to the washroom, where she heard a strange noise.
Upon investigating, she was confronted by the two suspects, one of whom choked her while the other tied her hands and feet and placed her in the washroom. Shortly after, she heard Deonarine calling for her, followed by a commotion in the hallway which eventually ceased.She managed to free herself and went into the hallway where she found Deonarine lying on his back.
She immediately contacted her brother and he subsequently contacted the police.A physical inspection of the house revealed that Gy$800,000 in cash was missing ($500,000 from under the bed and $300,000 from a black bag inside the bedroom).
The scene was processed thoroughly. The body was examined for marks of violence, but none were observed. However, swabs for DNA were taken from Deonarine’s hands. The body was escorted to Memorial Gardens Mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.Efforts are being made to locate the suspects as investigations continue.
