The Coronavirus is far from gone. In fact, there is a new variant—NB. 1.8.1. Infected persons experience fever or chills, coughing, sore throat, congestion, fatigue, and diarrhoea. This latest variant has already made its way to the USA and China. Taking this into consideration, Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony confirmed with Guyana Standard that a memo was sent to various hospitals to ensure precautionary measures are in place.

The memo referenced was leaked on social media and addressed to Nursing Supervisors at the West Demerara Regional Hospital. The document states: “Dear Supervisors, as you are aware, there has been a recent rise in COVID-19 cases. Please be informed that a designated area has been established adjacent to the Emergency Room to accommodate all stable COVID-positive inpatients, including prenatal mothers.”

It continues, “Any individual who tests positive for COVID-19 and requires admission will be placed in this designated area. Staff on duty will be assigned to this area as needed to ensure proper care and coverage…”

Providing clarification to Guyana Standard this morning, Minister Anthony assured that the memo should not be interpreted to mean there is a rise in cases locally. “…we are taking precautionary measures. This includes intensified testing of persons with flu-like symptoms. So this document is not to cause panic,” said Minister Anthony.

He stressed that it is an internal document to staff of different hospitals to ensure they understand the need to stay alert while putting systems in place so they know what protocol to follow in this instance.

According to the World Health Organization, NB.1.8.1 is growing rapidly compared to co-circulating variants. As of May 28, the new variant was found in 22 countries. The global health body said the virus remains under watch as these nations have submitted 518 NB.1.8.1 sequences from January 22 to May 18, 2025.
