President Irfaan Ali has strongly refuted claims made by businessman Azzrudin Mohamed in a recently circulated video, accusing him of dishonesty and attempting to mislead the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) about the true cost of a luxury vehicle.
In a pointed statement on Monday, President Ali said the video reinforces Mohamed’s “duplicity and dishonesty,” particularly regarding the declared value of a high-end vehicle imported into Guyana.
“My number is no secret. It is the same number I have had in and out of Government, so having my number is nothing special. Thousands of Guyanese continue to contact me on various matters,” the President noted, dismissing any implication of impropriety based solely on their communication.
President Ali reiterated that at no time did Mohamed present an invoice reflecting the vehicle’s actual value of US$695,000. Instead, he claimed Mohamed insisted that the vehicle cost US$75,000—a figure now widely discredited.
“We are also now aware of not one, but a series of financial transfers made to the same company, verifying what was actually paid for the car,” Ali stated, referencing evidence reportedly provided by U.S. authorities.
The President underscored the key issue at hand: “Did he lie about the value he presented as the purchase price of the vehicle? The answer is yes. As he again maintains in the video, the value is US$75,000, which we know is dishonest and factually incorrect.”
Ali further clarified that Mohamed never presented the accurate vehicle value to either him or the GRA.
On the matter of personal insults allegedly made by Mohamed in the video, the President declined to respond, saying such remarks are “a revelation of their true personality and nature.”
