General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo moments ago pronounced that it is unlikely former Permanent Secretary, Mae Thomas would return to the party’s electoral list.
Last year, Thomas was sanctioned by the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) for her alleged role in public corruption. The report noted that Thomas had used her position as Permanent Secretary to Guyana’s Minister of Home Affairs to offer benefits to Guyanese businessmen Nazar Mohamed and his son Azruddin Mohamed, in exchange for cash payments and high-value gifts.
During his press conference today, Jagdeo said he is unsure whether Thomas even wants to be on the list, adding, “but the way I personally see it, no, she will not be on the list…”
The General Secretary was also keen to note that the PPP/C’s list of candidates is still a work in progress.
“We’ve had suggestions from our base. We’re a party that has so many names now… unlike some parties that can’t get candidates to go on the list because if they go on the list, they face potential sanctions or they’re going on a losing list,” said the General Secretary.
Jagdeo said he will be meeting with the party structures later this month regarding the recommended names.
