There is still time for the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC) to join forces to contest the September 1, 2025, General and Regional Elections, says APNU parliamentarian and People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Executive Member, Ganesh Mahipaul.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Mahipaul noted that there is an increase in call for an accord between the two parties, weeks after talks collapsed.

“We have not closed the doors to negotiations,” the MP said, while adding that the APNU continues to reach out to other parties that wish to join.

He added that the suspense will more or less be quelled as the timeline moves closer to nominated day, when parties are expected to submit their lists of candidates and symbols.

“What I know is that there is a deadline that GECOM has for the submission of symbols. And after that deadline for the submission of symbols, there is also a deadline for nominations. That is the period I think we have,” Mahipaul said.

Asked if he thinks the parties will coalesce, he responded, “What I’ve learned over the years is that what seems to be far from achieving can be achieved with just a click of a finger. So, it may look like it’s in the distance right now, but maybe as soon as I come off this press conference, it can be achieved. Let’s wait and see how that goes.”

Talks between the APNU and AFC fell thorough during the process of determining the shares of the seats and who should be presidential candidate.
