Relations between Guyana and Canada are as strong as ever, this much was emphasized last evening at a well-attended event.

As it does annually, the Canadian High Commission in Guyana hosted a cocktail reception in celebration of Canada Day which Canada, observed annually in that country on July 1.  The event was held at the official residence of the Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana.

Addresses delivered by both President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Canada’s High Commissioner to Guyana, Sébastien Sigouin underscore a will by both countries to further deepen relations on several fronts.

While President Ali invited further collaboration in business, pointing especially to areas like the agriculture sector, High Commissioner Sigouin pointed to growing presence of Canadian businesses in Guyana.

In his address, President pledged support for Canada’s sovereignty and expressed appreciation to Canada on its support to Guyana’s own sovereignty.  The President highlighted several other similarities between Guyana and Canada including the nations commitment to democracy.

The Head of State pointed to a vibrant Guyanese Diaspora in Canada, hailing it to be a living bridge between the two countries.

The President said, “Canada’s contribution to Guyana’s development has been generous and enduring. They have partnered with us in improving our healthcare system, particularly in areas like maternal and child health, mental health and indigenous communities.”

Both countries pledged commitment to continued relations.

Canada officially became a country in July 1867 after the unification of provinces.
