Recent revelations that the Guyana government is using a US lobbying firm to arm American Congressmen with anti-Azruddin Mohamed tweets which alledge he is connected with Venezuela’s rogue regime, is far more frightening than citizens actually think. This is according to Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes.
During a recent interview on Context, a talk-show led by veteran journalist, Enrico Woolford, Hughes said it is not uncommon for a government to engage a lobbying firm to advance its interest in Washington. The difference in this instance, he said, is that US politicians are now being approached to openly interfere in domestic politics.
“What happens if the Chinese do the same thing? What happens if the Chinese are engaged by the government to come and get involved in domestic politics and domestic elections to attack a particular candidate who may be not supportive of Chinese companies or Chinese policies?,” said Hughes.
He opined that one can even ask if the door has now opened for interference by Iran, or any other nation for that matter. “This is like the genie coming out of the bottle,” said Hughes.
When news broke earlier this week that the government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hired Continental Strategy LLC at US$50,000 per month, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said the only intention was to counter Venezuela’s propaganda. He insisted that the government did not instruct the firm to pass tweets to congressmen which refer to Mohamed as a “Maduro puppet”. Jagdeo maintained that the company acted on its own accord in this regard.
