Presidential Candidate for the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Aubrey Norton, said yesterday that “big things” are in store for culture, youth, and sport once he assumes office. Speaking to scores of attendees at the APNU’s election campaign launch, Norton said his government would leave no stone unturned, providing the infrastructural framework that would support a state-of-the-art music industry, as well as arts and crafts.

He emphasized that his administration would invest in developing Guyana’s distinct cultural identity by supporting the creative talents of young people, especially those from indigenous communities.

“We can produce music, art, and culture that are distinctively Guyanese,” Norton said.

Turning to sports, the opposition leader criticised the lack of structured financial support for athletes, particularly those who suffer injuries and are left without assistance. He said this would change under his government by ensuring all national athletes benefit from medical insurance. Norton said these individuals would also receive government-sponsored salaries, allowing them to train and compete full-time.

Norton said, “It is unbelievable that in an oil-rich country, our athletes could be injured, and there is no mechanism to ensure that they are looked after.”

The Presidential Candidate also underscored the need for more sports facilities, which are crucial to performance enhancement. He said this would be addressed in his first term in office.
