Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has dismissed the proposal by Executive Member of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), Dr. David Hinds, for an annual $1 million cash grant to every Guyanese citizen from the country’s oil revenues. “It’s extremely stupid and it’s designed to mislead people,” Jagdeo cautioned at his recent press conference.
At the launch of the A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) 2025 election campaign held last Sunday, Dr. Hinds made the foregoing proposal.
He said Guyanese workers cannot survive on their current salaries, stressing that they need a government that will fight for their betterment. “As you all know, the party to which I belong, from as early as 2018, said that by 2025, each Guyanese could be, and every family will be entitled to $1 million.”
He noted that this is the recommendation of Professor Clive Thomas who did research supporting such a transfer as being possible and sustainable.
The politician said Guyanese deserve more than a “frek” and an APNU regime will give citizens way more than $100,000 to each citizen.
However, Jagdeo warned that such proposals, while appealing, is not grounded in economic reality.
The Vice President explained that the idea is not feasible and would wipe out all the oil money currently allocated in the 2025 national budget.
He further noted that in order to give 600,000 citizens $1 million each annually, it would cost $600 billion. “In the budget now, we have about $512 or $514 billion oil money. So that’s more than all the oil money in the budget,” Jagdeo added.
“But they said it on the platform and some people will repeat it everywhere…But it’s a lie,” Jagdeo said as he urged citizens to be weary of extravagant promises.
