General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo says that attempts made by the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) to get businessman Azruddin Mohamed to split PPP/C votes has backfired.
The GS contended that the APNU should be worried about Mohamed’s We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) infiltrating its strongholds. He made this comment moments after the PPP/C submitted its List of Candidates to the Chief Elections Officer at the Umana Yana, Kingston.
“I think APNU has to worry more about the Mohameds than the PPP. Their quiet collaboration is backfiring on them. The money they were getting from behind the scenes, it’s all working out and they made promises to him that he may not have to face or that he may avoid accountability for his criminal activities…that’s the promise that was made if he would split the PPP’s vote. It’s backfiring on them now,” the GS said.
Vice President Jagdeo has ruled out any post-election deal with Mohamed, who has been sanctioned by the United States Government over alleged gold smuggling and is currently facing tax evasion charges in Guyana.
When asked whether the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) would consider striking a deal with Mohamed in the event of a hung parliament, Jagdeo was emphatic: “There will not be a hung parliament.”
He expressed full confidence in the PPP’s electoral strength heading into the 2025 General and Regional Elections, citing the party’s resilience in the face of past challenges.
“In 2020, we won with all the odds staked against us and we’ve grown since. Look at the others—they’ve all lost energy. APNU is a shadow of itself. The AFC is still looking for a Prime Ministerial candidate,” Jagdeo stated.
