Incumbent President, Irfaan Ali says that his government is actively working to reduce cooking gas prices to as low as $1000 per bottle. He made this disclosure during a recent live address to the nation.
The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C)’s Presidential Candidate said this reduction will be made possible when the party’s flagship Gas-to-Energy Project comes on stream next year.
With cooking gas prices now between the $4,500 and $6,000 range per 20lb cylinder, the population would undoubtedly welcome this reduction. President Ali said that his move is part of the government’s strategy aimed at eliminating poverty and tackling the high cost of living.
The gas-to-energy project is central to the government’s energy expansion agenda, and is designed to transport natural gas from the offshore Stabroek Block’s Liza oilfield to a Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) facility and a 300-megawatt power plant located at Wales, West Bank Demerara. The facility will convert 50 million cubic feet of gas daily into power, promising a 50% reduction in electricity costs nationwide. This is expected to boost the competitiveness of manufacturing industries and reduce Guyana’s dependence on heavy fossil fuels.
