In response to complaints made to both himself and the Head of State, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party / Civic (PPP/C), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday assured that every police rank who is eligible for promotion will be given their due.

He made the statement during a press conference held at Freedom House. Jagdeo said, “I want to assure all of the police who have contacted the president… everyone who is eligible will receive the promotion.”

Jagdeo who also serves as Vice President disclosed that the government will be implementing a grievance process. Jagdeo explained that this mechanism will allow ranks to report if they believe they were overlooked during the recent promotion exercise. He assured that each report will be examined, and once eligibility is confirmed, the individual will also be promoted.

The Vice President’s announcement comes just days after Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, announced the promotion of over 2,000 ranks within the Guyana Police Force, all with the aim of honouring long-serving officers and strengthening career progression.

Jagdeo disclosed, “I’ve had a number of text messages from many people and their relatives. The president has received numerous messages, as well as senior policemen.” He said that several individuals have complained that, despite committing years of unblemished service to the GPF, they were not included on the promotion list.

The Vice President shared that while 2,000 ranks have already been notified of their promotions, another 800 are expected to be informed soon. “There are others who have contacted us and said that they may be bypassed or overlooked for one reason or another. They may be part of the 800,” he noted.

With effect from Friday, August 1, 2025, President Ali announced that Constables with five to seven years of service and no disciplinary record will be elevated to Lance Corporal at the highest level. Current Lance Corporals will move to the top of their scale, while Constables with eight to 10 years of service will be promoted directly to Corporal at the highest end of the scale.

Corporals within the same range will also be adjusted to the highest level. Ranks with 10 to 13 years of service will be promoted to Sergeant, and those with 13 to 15 years will reach the highest level of the Sergeant scale.

Members with 15 to 20 years of service must demonstrate leadership capabilities to be considered for officer rank. Those with over 20 years of clean service who are not yet Inspectors will be elevated to Inspector at the entry point of the scale.
