Guyana has been rocked by a wave of deadly accidents over the past three days, with at least seven lives lost in separate crashes along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, the Pirara Trail in Region Nine, and Montrose on the East Coast of Demerara. Among the dead are a young family of three, a six-year-old boy, and a pedestrian.

Loo Creek, Linden/Soesdyke Highway – 3 dead

The first incident took place on August 16, 2025, at about 01:30 hours on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, in the vicinity of Loo Creek. Three people were killed and another occupant hospitalised.

The accident involved a parked motor lorry, GAF 2776, and a motorcar, PAH 9911, owned and driven by 26-year-old Mairo Campbell, along with three occupants of the car: Marenzo Campbell, a 6-year-old boy; Shelly Joseph, a 26-year-old female; and Keiron Wells, a 25-year-old male — all of Hyde Park, Timehri.

Enquiries disclosed that the lorry was proceeding north along the western drive lane of the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, in the vicinity of Loo Creek, laden with wooden materials. The driver parked the lorry on the western side of the highway after the right-side front wheel tyre ‘blew out’. At the time, no reflectors were placed to the rear, side, or front of the parked lorry to alert other road users. The car, PAH 9911, was proceeding north along the western lane at a fast rate and collided with the rear of the lorry.

As a result of the impact, the driver, along with the three occupants, received injuries to their heads and other parts of their bodies. They were all taken out of the car by the police and public-spirited citizens in an unconscious condition, placed into a passing motor vehicle, and taken to the Linden Hospital Complex. There, Marenzo Campbell and Keiron Wells were pronounced dead on arrival, while Shelly Joseph succumbed to her injuries while receiving medical treatment.

The driver was also admitted to the hospital suffering from a dislocated left foot and a displaced left eye. His condition is regarded as serious but stable. The bodies of the deceased are awaiting post-mortem examinations. A breathalyser test was conducted on the lorry driver, and no trace of alcohol was found in his system. Further checks revealed that the driver of the lorry was not the holder of a licence to drive the said class of vehicle.

Pirara Trail, Region 9 – 3 dead

Jagnarine Stephen, a 23-year-old motorcyclist, along with his 24-year-old wife, Kyrea Stephen, and their two-year-old daughter, Laurel Stephen, died in an accident that occurred at around 11:20 hours on Sunday, August 17, 2025, on the Pirara Trail Road, Central Lethem, Region 9.

The family of three from Yakarinta Village, North Rupununi, was travelling on a red and black motorcycle along the trail when they were struck down by a minibus, BAC 8020, which is owned by Shawn Pedro of Tabatinga Lethem but was driven at the time by Darwell Bernard, a 34-year-old resident of Katoka Village.

Enquiries disclosed that the minibus driver was proceeding north along the Pirara Trail at about 50 kmph, and while negotiating a turn, collided with the motorcycle, which was proceeding in the opposite direction at a fast rate.

As a result of the collision, the family of three was thrown off the motorcycle and fell on the trail, where they received multiple injuries. An Emergency Medical Team from the Lethem Hospital was summoned and arrived shortly with an ambulance and a doctor. The motorcyclist and his two-year-old daughter were pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife was examined, picked up in an unconscious state, but unfortunately succumbed while being transported to the Lethem Regional Hospital.

The bodies were taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital’s mortuary for storage and post-mortem examinations.
The minibus driver was arrested and placed into custody. Two breathalyser tests found no trace of alcohol on his breath.

Montrose – 1 dead

Police are also investigating a fatal accident that occurred at about 04:00 hrs today, Monday, August 18, 2025, on the Montrose public road, East Coast Demerara, involving motorcar PAC 8964, owned and driven by a 24-year-old welder of Martyrsville, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, and a pedestrian (particulars unknown at this time).

Enquiries disclosed that the car was proceeding east along Montrose public road when it is alleged by the driver that the pedestrian (now deceased) ran from north to south across the road into the path of the vehicle.

Upon seeing this, the driver said he applied the brakes and a collision occurred, where the pedestrian was flung eastwards and fell onto the road’s surface. The pedestrian received injuries to his body, and the driver drove away from the scene but subsequently returned.

An ambulance was summoned to the scene, where the pedestrian was pronounced dead. He was placed into a police vehicle and conveyed to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s mortuary. The body is presently awaiting a post-mortem examination and identification.

The accident scene was visited by ASP Gobin, Lance Corporal Harlequin, and a party of police ranks. A Notice of Intended Prosecution was served on the driver, and the vehicle was examined by a licensing and certifying officer.

A breathalyser test was also conducted on the driver and it showed no trace of alcohol in his system. The driver is presently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
