If successful at the September 1 General and Regional Elections, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has pledged to strengthen support for the University of Guyana (UG), its students and faculty.

The party’s manifesto describes UG as central to Guyana’s societal and economic transformation.

“We will accordingly respect the institution and invest the resources required to optimize its functions, operations, contributions, and impact for the benefit of individual citizens, communities, other institutions, and the nation as a whole,” the party stated.

As part of its plan, APNU says it will collaborate with UG’s administration and wider community to design a five‐year development plan. This will include a significant increase in funding, with the party projecting a 50% budgetary boost for the university in 2026.

Among its commitments, APNU has pledged to:

  • Continue to make university education totally free by banning fee payment for new and current students, reimbursing payments, and writing off loans
  • Pay a monthly stipend of G$50,000 to students
  • Include students who live away from home into its national Rent Assistance Scheme
  • Construct more dormitories to meet demand
