Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at about 05:30 hours today (Wednesday, 27th August 2025), at the intersection of the eastern carriageway of the Heroes Highway and Mocha Main Access Road, East Bank Demerara.

The accident involved motor lorry, GAH 9771, owned and driven by Arif Haniff, a 29-year-old of Cove and John, East Coast Demerara, and a motor car, PAH 7906, owned and driven by Charles Richards, a 64-year-old of Lot 31 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, Georgetown.

Enquiries disclosed that the car was proceeding east along Mocha Main Access Road, and as it approached the intersection of Heroes Highway and Mocha Main Access Road, where there is a STOP Sign and a STOP Line lawfully placed, regulating the movements of Traffic, the driver failed to comply with the signs and continued east.

The car ended up in the path of the lorry, which was proceeding south along the eastern carriageway of Heroes Highway, and a collision occurred.

As a result of the crash, both vehicles were damaged. The driver of the car received injuries to his head and other parts of his body. The Ambulance Service was summoned to the scene, which arrived shortly after with a team of Emergency Medical Technicians, who checked and examined the driver of the car and pronounced him dead at the scene of the accident.

The body was then escorted by the Police to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary, where it was kept for cold storage awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Both vehicles were examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer. A Notice of Intended Prosecution was prepared and served on the Lorry driver. A breathalyser test was conducted on the Lorry driver, and no trace of alcohol was found in his system. The driver is in police custody, assisting with the investigation.
