The Plaisance community on the East Coast Demerara (ECD), home of former Opposition Leader and APNU presidential candidate Aubrey Norton, delivered a striking message at the polls, with about 60% of voters casting their ballots against him.
An examination of 15 ballot boxes from polling stations across Plaisance, including the Plaisance Secondary and Primary schools, the Community Center, the Health Center, Society Hall, and the Prince William Street Nursery School, showed that the APNU secured 1,028 votes out of 2,594 valid ballots cast. That represents roughly 40% of the total and was the highest tally for any party.
The governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party split the community’s support almost evenly, with 765 votes (29.5%) and 743 votes (28.6%), respectively.
Smaller parties, including the Alliance For Change (29 votes), the ALP (8 votes), and the FGM (21 votes), trailed far behind.
Norton who led the APNU into the general election failed to win majority support in his own backyard.
His rejection in Plaisance mirrors a broader rejection of the APNU at the polls nationwide. The APNU, led by the decades-old People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), has seen its support base eroded, mostly by the WIN party and, to some extent, the PPP.
The WIN party now appears poised to replace the APNU as the country’s main opposition force.
