An examination of 17 statements of poll from the Leonora community, uploaded by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), shows resounding support for President Irfaan Ali in his hometown. The statements came from polling stations at the Leonora Technical and Vocational Institute, the Leonora Nursery School, the Leonora Primary School, and the Leonora Secondary School.

Of the 17 boxes, 16 were complete, while one did not include votes and is yet to be corrected by GECOM. The completed statements show that approximately 85% of valid votes were cast in favour of the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic. The PPP/C secured 2,625 votes out of 3,079 total, while the WIN Party received 310 votes, or about 10%, and the opposition APNU earned 125 votes, or roughly 4%.

Ali’s dominance in Leonora stands in stark contrast to the performance of APNU presidential candidate Aubrey Norton in his own hometown of Plaisance, where about 60% of voters cast ballots against him. The Leonora results mirror a broader national trend, with the PPP maintaining commanding victories in most regions, while the APNU’s traditional base has fractured, with many supporters shifting to the WIN Party.

In the years leading up to the election, Leonora benefited from several public investments and private initiatives. A community park was commissioned by the First Lady in June, while the government upgraded the market road. Two dormitories were opened at the Leonora Secondary School in 2023. Residents also received house lots, including allocations for young professional homes expected to be built there. Meanwhile, private developments have given the area a facelift, with economic activity buoyed by the new Sheriff Medical Hospital and a mall.

On Election Day itself, Leonora was one of the livelier communities along the West Coast of Demerara, with a noticeably higher turnout compared to neighbouring areas.
