Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo told reporters outside the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) High Street, Kingston office on Friday afternoon that preparations are already being made for the swearing-in of Irfaan Ali for his second term.

An initial tally of the declarations for all 10 electoral districts shows the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) comfortably leading by what Jagdeo has called a landslide.

Jagdeo, who also serves as General Secretary of the PPP, said that based on the portion of the recount he has observed, it is likely that a national declaration could be made by the elections body on Saturday evening.

His comments came as the GECOM progresses a recount. It has completed the recount of a sub-district of District 4 and is currently handling a recount of 77 ballot boxes in District 5. There has been no report of a deviation from the original District 4 results, which showed the PPP securing the highest number of votes in the General Election — a first for that district.

In recent electoral history, District 4 has been an APNU stronghold. But its vote share fell significantly this year, eroded further by the emergence of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party. WIN captured part of APNU’s traditional base and went on to secure victories in both District 7 and District 10, another of APNU’s historic strongholds.
