General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP/C), Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, has declared victory for his party even as a recount of is being conducted at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) headquarters in Georgetown.

On Thursday, at a press conference held at Freedom House on Robb Street, Jagdeo said the General and Regional Elections on September 1 were conducted in a manner that makes the entire country very proud.

He reminded that the results were declared by Returning Officers (ROs) for all 10 districts and that the tabulation shows the PPP won a landslide in the 2025 elections.

Jagdeo compared the margins between the PPP and the combined opposition in 2020 and 2025. In 2020, he said, the PPP secured 50.7% of the votes while the combined opposition got 49.3%, a difference of less than 1% point. “It was 0.3 of a percentage of percent difference,” he said.

According to figures published by GECOM, this year, the PPP gained 55.32% of the votes, while the combined opposition got 44.68%. “A difference of 10.6%. From considering in 2020, 0.3 of 1% and now in these elections, a difference between the PPP and the combined opposition of 10.6%. This is a landslide by any standard. A landslide,” Jagdeo outlined.

He recalled that in 2020, the PPP’s one-seat majority came from 6,390 more votes than the combined opposition. However, at the 2025 elections, PPP got 46,513 votes more than the combined opposition. He outlined, “46,513 votes more than them combined. That’s a landslide. That’s a landslide.”

Although a recount is ongoing following requests from A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), the declared results show the PPP maintaining its traditional strongholds and, for the first time in history, winning Region Four. The party secured Regions One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Eight and Nine, while WIN claimed Regions Seven and Ten.

Further, Jagdeo emphasised that observers found the process transparent, despite the count being cumbersome.

“Guyanese across the 10 regions of Guyana have been able to openly, freely cast their votes in a peaceful manner and every international observer group that has witnessed the polls in Guyana have concluded that the elections were peaceful and free and fair,” he said.

He noted that observers recognized the thoroughness of the process, with counting done openly in the presence of international and local observers and political agents. “The statements of poll were all concluded and signed on to by the presiding officers and the polling agents for all the political parties. Those statements were immediately uploaded to GECOM’s website and available to all Guyanese, unlike in the past,” Jagdeo added.

He lauded the process of uploading SOPs, noting they were uploaded within hours. Jagdeo also highlighted that the tabulation was conducted in the presence of Returning Officers, other GECOM officials and party agents, and that the results for all 10 districts were declared and signed off by agents.

“Those results for all ten regions are now in the public domain for all Guyanese to see. And we are just, what, maybe two days away from the conclusion of the elections,” the General Secretary said. He assured that the 2025 elections would not take months to be finalised.
