The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has registered its disappointment with a magistrate who granted bail to a suspect in an acid-throwing incident that has left two women with life-altering scars.

See statement below:

In the wake of an over-increasing attack against women, the Guyana Police Force wishes to express its grave disappointment in the granting of bail by a Magistrate from the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to Keron Daniels, who was charged with Throwing Corrosive Fluid with Intent, committed on Jilicia Leitch and Nirmala Sukraj.

On 2025-09-16, the accused appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s court before Her Worship Faith McGusty and was remanded to prison for one day. The accused appeared today (2025-09-17) at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before the same Magistrate, and the Police Prosecutor objected strenuously to bail, informing the magistrate that the Police were in possession of a confession statement from the accused, on video, and that the victim is still in a very serious condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

According to the medical officials, the victim has lost sight in one of her eyes, and her face is severely disfigured. Nevertheless, the Magistrate still granted bail in the sum of $500,000.

It is apt to note that the accused and the victim were in a relationship that had a history of conflict. The woman herself pleaded from her hospital bed that she wanted justice.

Despite the heavy prevalence of violence against women in Guyana, Magistrates continue to omit to take this crucial factor into account in exercising their discretion in respect to the granting of bail.

The matter is further compounded by the high likelihood of these types of offences being repeated, especially when the alleged offender continues to have ready access to the victim.

Notwithstanding these setbacks, the Guyana Police Force pledged to continue to make every possible effort in reducing, if not wholly eradicating, these heinous acts of violence being committed so wantonly against the women in our society.
