From jump, Azruddin Mohamed was adamant that the sanctions imposed on himself and father had only to do with Mohamed Enterprise, the multi-billion dollar gold dealing business owned and operated by the Mohameds. He insists that truly, those sanctions were not imposed to affect affiliates of the family with no proximity to the affairs of Mohamed’s Enterprise. Yet, such persons continue to be targeted.
Bank accounts belonging to WIN candidates and party members were closed over the election campaign season. Further, Mohamed claims that just yesterday, Friday, he was informed about the closure of yet another account.
Mohamed made this and other revelations during an exclusive interview with Guyana Standard. According to Mohamed, the continued closure of accounts is a source of much distress to him.
“It really hurt me, all these people just crying and complaining to me. Some banks wrote them letters indicating if they cannot pay up, their houses will be seized. It is serious you know man. We have to do something,” Mohamed said.
He said it is common knowledge that the sanctions have nothing to do with young professionals, nurses and teachers alike. “It has nothing to do with a nurse who has $2,000 in her bank account… We know it is to drive fear into people.”
Mohamed said that just yesterday, a WIN member received a letter from a local bank regarding closure of their account. He said he inquired of the member as to the sum of money stored in that account. It was $1,500, Guyana dollars.
Mohamed said that he is at pains to understand why ordinary Guyanese are being victimized for supporting his political party when members of his own family, including his sister and mother, still enjoy active accounts at Republic Bank. “My family, the sanctioned family still got their open accounts.”
The political leader said it is clear that the intention is simply to scare people from lending continued support to his party.
“I mentioned from the start that this sanction has to do with Mohamed Enterprise. Mohamed Enterprise cannot do business with international companies. That’s it.”
