President Irfaan Ali has assured that Parliament will be reconvened within the constitutional deadline, which gives him until early November to act.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday morning, Ali pointed to Article 69(1) of the Constitution, which requires a new session of Parliament to be summoned within four months after dissolution. Parliament was dissolved on July 3 ahead of the September 2 General and Regional Elections.

“I still have a lot of time in the Constitution to reconvene Parliament. It will take me some time in November, within the Constitution,” the President said. “Guyana can trust the People’s Progressive Party/Civic government … we will operate with the Constitution.”

The September elections shifted the balance of the National Assembly. The PPP/C secured 36 seats, up from 33 previously, while the newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, led by Azruddin Mohamed, will take 16 seats. A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) strength was significantly reduced, and the Forward Guyana Movement won one seat.

Ali stressed that the government’s actions will remain firmly within the law. “What I can assure you and Guyana is that [Parliament] will be reconvened within the constitutional limits and timeframe,” he said.
