Police in Regional Division 6 are continuing their investigation into the death of Cledwin Gordon, called “Smokey”, a 68-year-old labourer of DeVeldt, Berbice River.

Enquiries disclosed that on Saturday, October 11, 2025 about 12:39hrs, police ranks visited DeVeldt Village, Berbice River, following reports that Gordon had gone missing after reportedly being involved in an altercation with another villager.

During the visit, several residents were interviewed, and a cutlass, alleged to have been used during the altercation, was recovered. The suspect, a 49-year-old labourer of DeVeldt, Berbice River, was arrested and taken into custody. The cutlass was lodged as evidence.

On Sunday, October 12, 2025 about 06:00hrs, Gordon’s body was discovered floating in the Berbice River in the vicinity of DeVeldt Village. The body was retrieved and examined by investigators, after which it was escorted to the Bath Settlement Regional Hospital.

There, Gordon was officially pronounced dead. The remains were later taken to Bailey’s Funeral Home pending an autopsy.

On Monday, October 13, 2025, the suspect was interviewed by investigators and remains in custody as investigations continue.
