The Guyana Government will be taking steps to tighten regualtion on gambling in the country. This is according to the Vice-President, Bharrat Jagdeo.

The official’s announcement comes weeks after he lamented that gambling has become a serious social issue that requires immediate curbing.

At his press conference today, the VP spoke about implementing more stringent regulatory measures which will include the introduction of appropriate taxation.

“This gambling has blossomed and created a series of negative problems for our communities: breaking up families [and] creating hardships for a lot of single parents,” he told reporters.

He also noted that with gambling platforms now being easily accessible, people are utilising their income, particularly on online gambling with no regard for the best interest of their families.

“What we have now, is gambling on demand. It is one every phone, it’s an app and it’s facilitated by the local establishments and on a very liberal licencing policy and a very liberal taxation policy,” Jagdeo noted.

Earlier this month, the VP revealed that faith-based leaders have already raised concerns with the government about the harmful impact of gambling.

“They believe that it’s a social ill that’s creating many problems within the family. People go to these little places, the shops in their communities, and all day long, on their phone, thinking about some credit to put in a bet,” he said during his October 2, 2025, press conference.
