Leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, Azruddin Mohamed this afternoon claimed that his party won Guyana’s September 1 elections, despite official results showing otherwise.
Mohamed has provided no evidence to substantiate his claims, which contradict the certified results issued by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
“We won this elections. The PPP, it’s a rigged government. We won the elections,” Mohamed told reporters, following his swearing-in as a Member of Parliament.
“That is why they are so scared. They are so scared of this movement because they know the true numbers,” he said.
According to GECOM’s official declaration, the PPP/C secured 242,497 votes, representing about 55% percent of the total valid votes cast. WIN placed second with 109,075 votes, roughly 25%.
Despite this, Mohamed insisted, “We didn’t get 109,000 votes. We won the elections.” When pressed on how he determined that the election was rigged, he responded, “The [GECOM] website was down,” and claimed, “GECOM is an arm of the PPP. We gotta try to get reform. We gotta try to get biometrics, because if we don’t, they’re going to continue rigging the elections.”
Mohamed, who leads WIN, said the party intends to push for major electoral reforms, such as biometrics, ahead of the next general elections. “The next step, the next elections, we going into the office,” he said.
He also revealed that WIN has decided on three persons to nominate as commissioners to sit on the seven-member Elections Commission, though he did not disclose the names.
