Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has assured that no citizen will be denied access to the government cash grants because they do not have a bank account.
Speaking at a press conference today, Jagdeo explained that while it is beneficial for Guyanese to open bank accounts, particularly as the government modernizes its financial systems, the lack of one will not disqualify anyone from receiving support.
“No one will be denied their cash grant because they don’t have a bank account. But it is good to have one,” the Vice President stated.
Addressing concerns about access to banking services for those living in remote and hinterland communities, Jagdeo emphasized that the government is actively exploring solutions. Jagdeo noted that while it is impossible to establish physical bank branches in every community, electronic and mobile banking offer viable options for citizens to manage their accounts and track payments efficiently.
“We’re obsessing over this issue about how do we get all our people connected to the financial system – those who live in the most remote parts of our country,” he said. “So this is where internet banking, and mobile banking are important…So, you can be in Gunns and have a phone – because they now have internet connection – and check your account or have your money paid into it.”
His comments follow President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s announcement that the government will soon unveil a series of comprehensive measures aimed at improving the livelihoods of all citizens, including cash grants for vulnerable groups.
President Ali said the measures, to be announced before the end of the year, will focus on the “total empowerment” of every Guyanese.
To ensure the smooth and efficient distribution of these benefits, the President encouraged citizens to open bank accounts.
