Former APNU+AFC Parliamentarian Devin Sears has been granted $400,000 bail in connection with an ongoing drug trafficking case. The decision was handed down when Sears appeared before Justice Navindra Singh in the High Court today.
Sears was represented by prominent attorney and former AFC Leader, Nigel Hughes. The matter has been adjourned, and Sears is expected to make his next court appearance on November 11 at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
This development follows Sears’ earlier remand to prison after being jointly charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. He and Albert Sandy, a 69-year-old farmer from Tacama Waterfront, Upper Berbice River, were brought before Magistrate Rushell Liverpool at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
Sears, a 39-year-old educator, pleaded not guilty to the charge, while Sandy pleaded guilty and was subsequently sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. Despite Sandy’s admission and acceptance of full responsibility for the narcotics, Magistrate Liverpool had initially ordered that Sears remain on remand pending further proceedings.
The charges stem from a major drug bust that occurred on October 20, 2025, the night of Diwali, at the Bamia Police Checkpoint. Police had stopped a dark blue Toyota Hiace minibus, registration BAJ 4486, registered to the Region Ten Tourism Committee Inc., which Sears was driving.
A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered 22 bulky black plastic bags and four large brown canvas bags containing 310.71 kilogrammes of marijuana. Sandy was a passenger in the vehicle at the time.
Following the incident, Sears resigned from the Region Ten Tourism Committee, where he had served as chairman. He continues to be represented by attorneys Nigel Hughes and Bernard Da Silva.
The Alliance for Change (AFC) has since issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
