Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, on Wednesday met with the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Resident Representative for Guyana, Ms. Katy Thompson, at his Regent Street office to discuss ongoing and future collaboration in disaster risk reduction, flood management, and climate-resilient agriculture.

During the meeting, Minister Mustapha commended the UNDP for its sustained partnership and technical support, particularly in strengthening Guyana’s capacity to mitigate and respond to climate-related challenges affecting the agriculture sector. The discussion highlighted several ongoing initiatives being implemented through the partnership, including the Building Resilience through Climate-SMART Agriculture while Promoting a Healthier Environment project, which aims to enhance adaptive capacity and reduce farmers’ vulnerability to extreme weather events; the Disaster Risk Management and Early Warning for Agriculture project, which focuses on improving institutional preparedness and real-time response systems for floods and droughts; and the Gender-Responsive Climate and Agriculture Linkages for Sustainable Land Restoration project, which promotes inclusive approaches to sustainable land management by ensuring women’s participation in climate-smart and environmentally responsible farming practices.

Minister Mustapha reaffirmed the Government of Guyana’s commitment, under the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, to deepening partnerships with the UNDP and other international agencies to safeguard livelihoods and strengthen resilience within the agriculture sector.

Ms. Thompson, in turn, expressed the UNDP’s continued support for Guyana’s national development priorities and its commitment to community-centered, innovative approaches that advance environmental sustainability and long-term resilience. (Ministry of Agrculture)
