ExxonMobil on Sunday said three discoveries it made this year were not significant enough to announce.
The company’s statement follows an article by Kaieteur News, which accused it of concealing its oil finds in the Stabroek Block.
Kaieteur News questioned why the Ministry of Finance’s Mid-Year Report listed three discoveries in 2025 while Exxon had not announced any new finds. The company said all discoveries are formally reported to the Ministry of Natural Resources, as part of its obligations, regardless of size or commercial viability. “That is how they ended up in the [Mid-Year] Report,” the company said.
Exxon said it applies a separate standard to determine what is released publicly, noting that it only announces finds that it considers significant. The three wells mentioned by the Ministry, it said, did not meet that threshold.
“To date, we have announced more than 30 significant discoveries in the Stabroek Block, while filing 51 Notices of Discovery with the Ministry. This reflects our commitment to transparency and regulatory compliance,” Exxon said.
The company estimates it has discovered 11 billion oil equivalent barrels offshore Guyana in the Stabroek Block and has not updated this estimate since 2022.
Exxon operates the Stabroek Block with partners Hess and CNOOC.
