Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, on Tuesday welcomed Mr. Bruce Lee, Head of Economic Commercial Consular at the Chinese Embassy in Guyana, during a courtesy call at his Regent Street office. The engagement focused on strengthening ongoing economic cooperation between the two countries, with particular attention to rice and other key agricultural crops.
Mr. Lee reaffirmed China’s readiness to support Guyana’s agricultural advancement through technical expertise in several areas, including the cultivation of dragon fruit, multiple bamboo varieties, Chinese grass, and an expanded range of vegetables and fruits. He also noted that study tours in various agricultural disciplines are being considered for Guyanese students in 2026, opening the door for valuable knowledge exchange.
During the discussion, Minister Mustapha highlighted the significant opportunities for Guyana to benefit from China’s advanced technology in rice cultivation—especially in improving salt tolerance and boosting yields. He emphasised that such collaboration aligns with Guyana’s broader push to modernise and diversify its agriculture sector.
The Minister also underscored the long-standing and productive relationship between Guyana and China, expressing confidence that this partnership will continue to grow in the years ahead.
Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dhaneshwar Deonarine, was also present for the meeting.
