The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) has commenced critical desilting works along key drainage channels in Georgetown as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the city’s flood prevention systems. Works have already begun on the Commerce Street outfall channel and Avenue of the Republic to improve water flow and reduce flooding during periods of heavy rainfall and high tides.

Over the coming days and weeks, dredging operations will be extended to several additional outfall channels across the capital, including those at Cowan Street, Church Street, Princess Street, Sussex Street, La Penitence, South Ruimveldt North Ruimveldt, and Rome. These interventions are designed to remove silt buildup that restricts water discharge and contributes to localized flooding in commercial and residential zones.

In addition to dredging activities, NDIA is currently excavating and clearing under the bridge along the South Road drainage channel to allow for improved water flow to the sluice, enhancing the overall efficiency of the drainage system in this heavily trafficked area.
