Guyana’s landmark Gas-to-Energy project, which has been hit by repeated delays, is now expected to be delivered in the last quarter of 2026, President Irfaan Ali said, pushing the project roughly two years past its original schedule.
The project was initially expected to be completed in late 2024, before timelines shifted to mid-2026. Ali said the government is now targeting the final quarter of 2026 for delivery.
“We are hoping by the last quarter of 2026, the Gas-to-energy project will be in a position to deliver,” Ali said during an interview while discussing the performance of the Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL).
The Gas-to-Energy project, intended to lower electricity costs and improve reliability, has been marred by delays largely linked to the construction of onshore infrastructure. ExxonMobil laid a pipeline to bring natural gas from offshore fields to Wales. However, onshore facilities required to convert the gas into power are still under construction.
The delays have unfolded against continuous blackouts. GPL had promised stable supply during the Christmas season, but the period was marked by numerous outages.
The government of Guyana has been undertaking major investments to modernize its electricity infrastructure as demand rises rapidly alongside economic growth. Ali said even the Gas-to-Energy project would be problematic if the supporting transmission and distribution upgrades are not completed.
