Member of Parliament, Ganesh Mahipaul claims to have received information from a “reliable friend” to the effect that the Government of Guyana has already expended over $100M tax dollars in litigation fees to facilitate the extradition of Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar, known as Shell.

Mahipaul said his friend, who provided the information, works at the Ministry of Finance.

In a Facebook post, Mahipaul wrote, “Significant state resources continue to be expended, including law enforcement operations and the legal fees associated with the prosecution team.”

He added, “While I fully respect the independence of the judiciary and have no intention of commenting on or attempting to influence the court’s decision, I am deeply concerned about the length of time this matter is taking. Every additional day places an increasing financial burden on the State, and it is the people of Guyana who are ultimately footing the bill.”

He said utilizing such funds for an extradition is worrying at a time “the needs of ordinary Guyanese are great, these funds could be far better utilised to improve healthcare, education, public safety, and the overall quality of life for our citizens. I therefore call for this matter to be addressed with the urgency and timeliness it deserves, in keeping with due process and the rule of law.”
