The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has advised that an inquest be conducted into the death of 27-year-old pork-knocker Matthew Ramlochand, who was killed during an incident at Barakat Landing, Cuyuni River, earlier this month.
The Guyana Police Force, in an update on the matter, said that following the completion of investigations, a file was prepared and submitted to the DPP’s Chambers for legal advice. On Monday, January 19, 2026, advice was received directing that an inquest be held into the circumstances surrounding Ramlochand’s death.
Ramlochand, of the Soesdyke–Linden Highway, was allegedly murdered on Sunday, January 11, 2026, during an altercation at Barakat Landing. Police investigations led to the arrest of a 38-year-old male gold miner of Half Mile, Wismar, Linden, on Friday, January 16, 2026, in connection with the incident.
According to earlier police reports, the suspect became involved in a heated argument with Ramlochand and his brother, Tyrone Ramlochand, during which he allegedly armed himself with a pair of scissors and stabbed both men. Matthew Ramlochand succumbed to his injuries, while his brother was injured. The suspect reportedly fled the scene but was later apprehended at Barakat Backdam.
