Police are investigating an incident which occurred today at about 08:10hrs at Karasabai Village, South Pakaraimas (Normandy Crossing) during a joint excercise involving ranks of the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Defence Force and a Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) officer.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the ranks were boarding an 18-foot aluminium boat at the landing for an operation along the Rupununi River, when the vessel sank shortly after departing the landing. This forced the occupants to swim safely to the river bank.
A total of five (5) joint services ranks, including the coxswain and one GGMC officer were on board. No injuries were reported.
During the incident, three service rifles and a quantity of ammunition were reported missing in the river. Ranks of the Guyana Defence Force are currently conducting recovery efforts in the area.
Investigations are ongoing.
