The Government plans to install a high voltage cable linking the Vreed-en-Hoop Substation on the west bank of the Demerara River to the Kingston facility in Georgetown. This project forms part of transmission system that will be implemented to dispatch power from the Gas-to-Energy Project when it comes online.
Making the announcement today was Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar, during Day Two of the consideration of the 2026 Budget Estimates.
He was at the time speaking on the $66.2 billion that has been allocated for critical transmission infrastructure.
Guyana Standard understands that this cable will be planted more than 80 feet under the Demerara River bed.
Indar explained that the existing transmission line between the two substations is outdated and has a severely limited capacity, transmitting only seven megawatts of power.
“When the Gas-to-Energy project kicks in and anything happens to that line, the power is trapped there.”
He added, “We decided that we’ll need a ring circuit, so we’re putting a cable there to move about 180 to 200 megawatts.”
Indar noted that the increased power flow will require significant upgrades to the substations at both ends of the cable. As a result, the Vreed-en-Hoop and Kingston substations will be expanded to accommodate the additional capacity, at an estimated cost of $1 billion.
