In a rare scenario of Opposition agreeing with government, Member of Parliament, Amanza Walton-Desir commended the split-up of the Ministry of Public Works.
The new Dr. Irfaan Ali-administration, which took office following last year’s general election, saw many changes including the splitting of the Ministry of Public Works. Some sectors that previously fell under the Ministry of Public Works now fall under the Ministry of Aviation and Public Utilities, which is headed by Minister Deodat Indar.
Indar, serving his second stint in Cabinet, now has responsibility for all things maritime, aviation and a heavy portion of electricity.
Appearing before the Committee of Supply for the first time since assuming his new role, Indar was today asked to explain how his Ministry functions. He went on to tell the Committee, through the Chair, about the operations of his ministry, detailing who he relies on for various expertise. At the time, the Minister was responding to questions posed by Forward Guyana’s Walton-Desir. The political leader, herself having worked in aviation, commended the new outline and functioning of the ministry in a manner that will have greater attention being placed on aviation and other sectors. Walton-Desir expressed support for the new level of attention given, noting, “these are weighty areas that can do with specialized attention.”
Budget 2026 has set aside $140B for the Ministry of Aviation and Public Utilities.
