Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, in the Committee of Supply this afternoon, revealed that the Guyana Government is moving closer towards full acquisition of the Berbice River Bridge.

The Minister was at the time defending a whopping $227.2B allocation to his ministry under Budget 2026.

Though pressed by Opposition Member of Parliament, Saiku Andrews, Edghill did not divulge the cost which the government is prepared to pay for the vital link.

However, he maintained that the figure would be less than the cost it paid in tolls for a year.

Last year, the government made the decision to subsidise the toll for users, thereby absorbing the costs.

“I want to take this opportunity to inform the House that the government is on its way to owning the Berbice Bridge,” Edghill announced, noting that negotiations are ongoing.
