On Thursday, February 12, 2026, Shemay Bryan, a former officer of the Guyana Prison Service, was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 after being charged with possession of 345.8 pounds of cannabis for trafficking.

Conditions of her release require her to lodge all travel documents and report every other Friday to the nearest police station in her area of residence.

Last month, Bryan and her co-accused, Sarafina Pitt Cheddy, also a former prison officer, were arrested following a police stop and search along the No. 10 Public Road, West Coast Berbice. Officers discovered several brown salt bags and black garbage bags in the trunk of their vehicle, containing bulky parcels wrapped in transparent plastic. The packages, which weighed 345.8 pounds, were confirmed to be cannabis and were seized at the Fort Wellington Police Station.

Today, the duo appeared before Her Worship Taunna Hardy at the Fort Wellington Magistrate Court. Cheddy was denied bail on the grounds that she previously committed a similar offence.

According to their attorney, Bernard DaSilva, the court noted that the vehicle used in the offence was not registered to either woman and that the prosecution had not made full disclosure during the hearing. No trial date has yet been set, with proceedings expected to commence in April or May 2026. The matter has been adjourned to March 26, 2026, for report and further disclosure.
