Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on Tuesday February 24, 2026 about 17:50hrs on the northern carriageway of Industry Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
The incident involved Motorcycle, CR 523, driven by a 29-year-old man of Owen Street, Kitty, Georgetown with a 28-year-old female pillion rider of Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown and pedestrian Anjanie Mohabir, 69, of Block 8 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (deceased).
Initial enquiries revealed that the motorcycle was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of Industry Public Road on the pedestrian walkway at the time when vehicular traffic proceeding east along the said carriageway had stopped to allow the pedestrian to cross the road.
A collision subsequently occurred between the motorcycle and the pedestrian.
As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist, pillion rider and pedestrian sustained injuries. They were picked up and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they were seen and examined by doctors on duty. Mohabir succumbed while receiving medical treatment. The pillion rider was admitted for observation, while the driver was treated and sent away.
CCTV footage was seen and is to be obtained as part of the ongoing investigation. A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver of the motorcycle revealed no trace of alcohol.
The motorcycle is lodged pending investigation. The driver is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.
