A 28-year-old woman has been granted bail after appearing before the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court in connection with a fatal accident that occurred earlier this week.
Rushana Hopkinson appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where she was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
The charge alleges that on Sunday, February 22, 2026, along the Rupert Craig Highway in the vicinity of MovieTowne, East Coast Demerara, she drove motor car PAM 4632 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Jacqueline Cumberbatch.
Hopkinson was represented by attorney-at-law Bernard DaSilva.
The matter was heard before Magistrate Abigale Gibbs, who granted bail in the sum of $650,000. Conditions attached to bail include reporting requirements and the lodging of the defendant’s passport.
The charge is indictable, and as such, the accused was not required to enter a plea at this stage.
The case has been adjourned to March 30, 2026, for report and disclosure.
