The first pre-harvest activities have commenced for a five-acre onion pilot project at Manari in the Rupununi, Region Nine, being implemented through a partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and farmer Christopher Moses, with support from the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI).

The initiative forms part of a broader government push to expand crop production in hinterland regions, in line with President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s vision to work with farmers across Regions Eight and Nine to increase both traditional and non-traditional agricultural output in 2026.

The pilot is projected to produce approximately 70 tonnes per hectare, with the first full harvest expected to begin in the second week of April 2026.
