Police are investigating a mining incident which occurred on Tuesday March 24, 2026 about 15:00hrs, at a gold mining camp at 13 Miles, Mango Landing, Upper Demerara River, resulting in the death of Mark Anthony Williams, 27, a pit man of Morashee Village, East Bank Essequibo.
Preliminary enquiries revealed that the man was working in a mining pit along with other workers when heavy rain and high winds began, during which a tree reportedly fell into the pit and struck Williams, causing injuries to his head. He was taken out of the pit in an unconscious condition and was later found unresponsive.
The body is being escorted out of the area to a mortuary for official pronouncement and examination.
Investigations are in progress.
