See release from the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU):

The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) proudly commemorates the 50th anniversary of its historic recognition in the sugar industry, marking five decades of unwavering advocacy, resilience, and service to sugar workers across Guyana.

Under the theme “Born of Struggle, Built for Justice: Celebrating 50 years of GAWU’s recognition in the sugar industry,” this milestone event reflects on the Union’s enduring legacy while charting a forward-looking path in an evolving industry.

The commemorative activity will feature a distinguished keynote address by His Excellency, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali. The President, who has long maintained close ties with sugar workers and their struggles, is expected to underscore his Government’s continued commitment to the sugar industry—an industry that remains vital to the livelihoods of thousands of Guyanese families and the national economy.

GAWU’s President, Seepaul Narine, will also deliver an address, reflecting on the Union’s historic journey to recognition in 1976 and the many struggles, sacrifices, and triumphs that have defined its 50-year existence. His remarks will highlight the courage of workers and leaders who stood firm in pursuit of justice, dignity, and fair representation.

The programme will further be enriched by international solidarity, with addresses from Kristjan Bragason, General Secretary (a.g.) of the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers’ Associations (IUF), and Clifton Grant, IUF Caribbean Regional Secretary. Their contributions will reaffirm the global labour movement’s continued support for GAWU and its members.

Additionally, several messages of solidarity from local, regional, and international partners will be shared, reflecting the broad respect and recognition GAWU has earned over the decades.

This landmark event represents a central pillar of the Union’s 50th anniversary observances. It will pay tribute to outstanding stalwarts, activists, and workers whose dedication and sacrifice laid the foundation for the Union’s achievements. At the same time, the occasion will serve to reorient GAWU as it prepares to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future, ensuring that it remains a strong and effective voice for workers in the years ahead.

GAWU reaffirms its steadfast commitment to defending workers’ rights, advancing social justice, and contributing to the sustainable development of Guyana’s sugar industry.
